Mrs Joan Birkby
Died Thursday July 18, 2002

Tributes have poured in for Joan Birkby who lost her battle against cancer. Joan, from Rankin Avenue died on 18th July 2002, leaving behind her husband of 43 years Brian, her son Vaughan, her daughter Jeanette, grandsons John, Daniel and Adam and great granddaughter Leah.

After moving from West Yorkshire to Hesketh Bank in 1972, Joan was always heavily involved in the community. Among her many achievements within the local community, she started the first youth club in the church hall in 1973. Joan was also a member of Hesketh Bank Parish Council for nearly 20 years. Husband Brian said "I would like her to be remembered for all her heart in the community of Hesketh Bank".

Rector Richard Plant of All Saints Church said "she was a wonderful woman who was very much a part of the church". "She was involved in the Women's Union and Bible Study and followed her faith right through to her death". "She is an example to us all. We will miss her very much, but she has gone to the Lord and we can take comfort in that.

Joan was also a founder of the Hesketh Bank Library but as Secretary of the Village Hall Association, the Village Hall became her most precious project. Brian said "her pet subject was to see the hall finished. It is in desperate need of renovation which will cost at least £60,000. She applied for lottery grants to keep the building open and it was her dream to see a proper village hall made of bricks". "There must be some people out there who can help make this happen" added Brian.
