2010 West Lancashire Borough Council Elections

16th April 2010

Dear Electors,

In the Northern Parishes we have seen the results of a sustained and co-ordinated campaign by the Tories to gain absolute political control of County, Borough and Parish Councils. This has led to a virtual ‘one-party state’ of political representation locally. The public have no say, the opposition have no say. Only what Conservative central office says goes.

Many good independent councillors have either been bullied or driven out of position after years of first rate service.

Volunteers have quite literally, been locked out of the very buildings which they worked to fund and build, without an ounce of effort from eager Tories who step in after all the hard work is done to claim the glory. This is what happens when you have an unhealthy imbalance in local democracy. With even Parish Council elections being run by the Conservative Party machine, and no doubt the General Election aided by Lord Ashcroft of Belize, we are faced with the prospect of a virtual monopoly of our democratic process by a single party in the Northern Parishes.

I made the decision to stand as the official Labour Party candidate as I believe in fairness and social justice and feel that of all political parties, the Labour Party best represents these qualities. I wished to stand, properly resourced, in order to offer the electorate a viable alternative, independent from local and therefore national, Tory influence. I have had many people express their frustration at the lack of service they have experienced from their elected representatives. I can pledge to you that I will, with integrity, take up issues free from encumbrance, interference or deal making, on your behalf if I am elected in the forthcoming election.

Thank you,
John Hodson

ALL candidates in both the General Election for the MP for South Ribble and the West Lancashire Borough Council wards of Hesketh-with-Becconsall, Tarleton and North Meols are welcome to submit election statements for publication on their own page on this website.
