Parish
"Webzine" June 2007
From
the Rectory June 2007
Dear
Friends,
This
month is one of the busiest in our Parish calendar, with
Trinity Sunday, Walking Day, Rose Queen Field Day to name
but a few there will be plenty of opportunity for fun
and celebration. This month also sees several of our young
people and adults being confirmed. Their names are included
in this magazine and I would ask all of you to remember
them in your prayers as they prepare for confirmation
and first Holy Communion. The service will be at Holy
Trinity on Thursday 1 4th June at 7.30pm and it is important
that the candidates have the support of the Christian
community around them. Please make every effort to be
there. If you feel able to help in a practical way, there
is a list of food items required for the celebrations
afterwards.
Those of you who were present
at the A.P.C.M at the end of April will have gathered
that I now have pastoral care of Rufford parish as well
as Tarleton. It was agreed by that meeting that the main
Sunday Eucharist at Holy Trinity would be moved to the
slightly later time of 10.45 to enable me to spend a little
time with the congregation at St Mary’s after their
9.15 Eucharist. I am grateful that those present at the
meeting were so understanding of the need for this change
and I hope that we will all soon settle into our new Sunday
Morning routine. Trinity Sunday (3rd June) will be the
day on which we will begin at the new time of 10.45.
Corpus Christi, the day when
the Church gives thanks for the sacrament of Holy Communion,
falls on Thursday 7th June this year and there will be
a Sung Eucharist followed by drinks and nibbles for the
churches in our cluster at Tarleton at 7.30 pm.
Please
continue to pray that God’s will may be worked through
our lives and in our parish.
With
my prayers and best wishes.
Fr Nicholas

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting
Churchwardens: The only nominations for Warden were our
current ones, so Brian Butler and Keith Greaves were re-elected
unanimously. This is the last time they can serve under
the current rules, so we will need two new volunteers
next year.
PCC: The four vacancies were
all filled by the nomination of Beryl Baldwin, Pat Heap,
Barry Joughin and Neil Hodgkins. The first two were thus
re-elected, and the second two elected, unanimously.
At the short PCC meeting
after the APCM, Beryl Baldwin and Jim Aldridge were unanimously
re-elected PCC Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

News
from the school.
First
of all apologies to those of you who searched the May
edition of the parish magazine for our news. I am afraid,
I missed the deadline date!
At the beginning of this
term, the Year Four children spent three days in London
under the close supervision of Mrs Moon (their class teacher),
Mrs Gray, Father Nicholas and Mr Butler. The children
had a wonderful time and loved every minute of it. The
adults were a bit more reserved in their enthusiasm! We
are grateful to all four of them in giving the children
the opportunity to see so much of our capital city in
such a short space of time!
Time marches on and you may
now be aware that Mrs Gray has taken a new post as a school
adviser in the east of the county. I remain as acting
head-teacher until a new head is appointed and I must
say it is a privilege to continue in this position. I
am keen to ensure that we continue moving towards being
the outstanding school that the OFSTED inspector said
we could be. However the number one priority is to bring
the children to Jesus. “Let the children come to
me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of heaven
belongs to such as these.” St. Luke 18 v16. We are
secure in knowing we are all in your prayers as you are
in ours.

Bishop
Invites Diocese to Seaside ‘Big Day Out’ June
9
Bishop
Nicholas is inviting Lancashire's Anglicans to meet him
at the seaside for a 'Big Day Out', to encourage church
growth. Thousands of people from parishes across the county
are being invited to King Edward Vll and Queen Mary School
in Lytham St Annes, on June 9, for “a service with
a difference".
The celebration Eucharist
will be spread through the day, using marquees and open
spaces, and including 'flexi-time' for creative activities
and discussion. "It promises to be a joyful day,
when we will welcome one of our Church's most inspiring
mission leaders, Bishop Stephen Cottrell, to stimulate
our thinking and share our worship," Bishop Nicholas
said.
Opening worship and an address
by Bishop Stephen will be followed by "time to use
as you wish". Possibilities will include workshops,
discussion with Bishop Stephen and a possible 'prayer
walk' when people stroll through the local area, praying
both for that area and for the Church across Lancashire.
"This period of enrichment
and experience will lead into the Great Eucharistic Prayer
and administration of Holy Communion, and the renewal
of our commitment to Christ and His Church," the
Bishop said in a letter to all authorised clergy, lay
workers and Readers. "Individuals, families and church
families will be welcomed equally."
Special programmes will cater
for children and young people "and their commitment
and contributions will be celebrated in our concluding
community Eucharist," the Bishop added.
The timing of the day is: overall, 10 am to 3.30 pm. The
service starts at 11.00 am: Lunch break with discussion
groups 12.30 pm: The service resumes with the Offertory
and commitment to ministry at 2.00 pm.

Yes, we know it clashes with our Ecumenical Walk of Witness.
I’ve volunteered to represent the parish and will
welcome anyone else who wishes to come: if you are interested
let me know ASAP so I can let them know!

Informal Walking Group raises money for Duck Aid
The
sponsored walk on the Bank Holiday Monday, May 7th, was
for the Christian Aid appeal for ducks for families in
Bangla Desh, and the weather forecast suggested good weather
for ducks! But when the members of the Informal Walking
Group assembled at St Mary the Virgin, Eccleston, the
cloud stayed high and the rain held off. Twelve set off
(including one couple from Southport) and thirteen came
back (one joining at lunch time) from the six mile stroll
in the Yarrow valley. The ground was still remarkably
solid - the overnight rain had scarcely touched it - so
we made good time until we hit a freshly ploughed field
where the path had not been re-instated. (That’s
another letter to the Rights of Way officer at County
Hall!) The food, wine, beer and service at the Original
Farmers Arms were excellent.
Sponsorship and donations
combined came to £180 - and with some of the sponsors
subscribing to gift aid, Christian Aid will be able to
add another £13 from tax refunds. That’s enough
to give five families each a starter flock of 16 laying
ducks, and to train one member of each family in duck
care and marketing - or to buy the materials for a complete
repair to one house.
Thank
you to all who walked and to all who sponsored and gave
donations.

Magazine Jottings June 1906
Archdeacon Fletcher
On the 21st the Churchwardens
and Sidesmen went to Chorley for the purpose of being
admitted to their respective offices with the usual formalities
…
Ascension Day (the 24th
of May, this year) was observed as usual by a visit of
the Day-scholars to the Parish Church for a Children’s
Service at 9.00 am, at the conclusion of which the Archdeacon
questioned them on the event in our Lord’s life
which that day commemorates, and was pleased to find that
they had, as he expected, a very good and clear idea of
its circumstances; and that astonishing as those circumstances
were, that they quite understood and fully believed them.…
In the evening a service
was held in the Church, but the congregation was only
very small. Surely if the humble entry of our Lord into
the world is worth observing by the feast of Christmas,
his triumphal return to his native heaven when he had
accomplished all his redeeming work is at least equally
worthy of being honoured and had in remembrance.
We shall hope for better attendance next year.
“There are three things that are real: God, human
folly and laughter. The first two are beyond our comprehension;
so we must make do with the latter.”
John F Kennedy, quoted by Archbishop Tutu.
