HOLY WEEK & EASTER

From the Rectory April 2007

Dear Friends,
Holy Week is upon us and the Church throughout the world prepares to celebrate once again the mystery of redemption in her liturgy. Every day of the year a different set of proper prayers and readings establishes an ever changing theme at each service by which Christ in one liturgical year lives again his thirty three. Following the prayers day by day through a year, we relive the life of Christ: thirty years obeying, three years teaching, three hours redeeming. Of all that Christ did and taught during his earthly ministry, the events recalled in Holy Week are central to our faith.

If you normally don’t come to church during the week then of all the weeks in the year, this is the one when you should make an exception. We wouldn’t dream of turning down an invitation to our closest friends’ wedding. We would move heaven and earth to be at a brother’s funeral. Yet many stay away from the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday, and, like many of his first disciples, we are noticeable by our absence on Good Friday. Unlike them, we have no reason to be. We know the joy of Easter. It’s all a matter of priorities. Some may feel uncomfortable that I might be suggesting our first priority this week should be worship, but that is exactly what I am saying. Jesus agonised in the garden of Gethsemane for a reason not to go to the Cross, but his resolve was ‘thy will, not mine, be done’. It was he who asked his disciples to stay and watch with him, and he asks the same of us.

I hope and pray that we have a wonderful Easter, full of the joy of the Resurrection, and that our joy is all the more complete because we have as a community relived once again the events of Christ’s saving Cross and Passion.

This Easter I will also be celebrating with the people of St Mary’s, Rufford, as I assume pastoral responsibility for our neighbouring parish. Please pray for the people of Rufford, for Canon Jim as he prepares to move on, and for me as I begin to minister in both parishes. May God bless you all this Easter.

With love and prayers,
Fr Nicholas

How can ducks provide a flood barrier?
When a devastating flood hit Sunita’s village in Bangladesh in 2004, she was left with no way of providing for herself and her family. The whole village was underwater and all her livestock gone. But hope came in an unusual form: Sunita was helped to set up a duck hatchery. Ducks produce eggs, which provide nutrition and can be sold for extra income - and ducklings, which can be sold at market.
With this money, Sunita protected herself from future floods by strengthening her house with bamboo poles, and building a sturdy fence round it. She also made a high, secure platform for her ducks, so that they and their ducklings don’t swim off when the floods come again.
Sunita and her family are used to coping with annual flooding - it’s happened there for thousands of years. But Sunita worries that things are changing: “The floods have been getting worse bit by bit since I was a child. Each year the temperature seems to be increasing, too. But I can’t tell why.”
CHRISTIAN AID’s local partners helped Sunita by training her and starting her off with ducks. Just £12 will train someone else like Sunita to make a living from duck rearing. £24 will buy sixteen egg-laying ducks to start off another family. £60 will pay towards a duck hatchery to help more families. £100 can pay for enough corrugated tin to repair a house after flood damage.

Bishop Invites Diocese to Seaside ‘Big Day Out’ June 9
Bishop Nicholas is inviting Lancashire's Anglicans to meet him at the seaside for a 'Big Day Out', to encourage church growth. Thousands of people from parishes across the county are being invited to King Edward Vll and Queen Mary School in Lytham St Annes, on June 9, for “a service with a difference".

The celebration Eucharist will be spread through the day, using marquees and open spaces, and including 'flexi-time' for creative activities and discussion.

"It promises to be a joyful day, when we will welcome one of our Church's most inspiring mission leaders, Bishop Stephen Cottrell, to stimulate our thinking and share our worship," Bishop Nicholas said.

Opening worship and an address by Bishop Stephen will be followed by "time to use as you wish". Possibilities will include workshops, discussion with Bishop Stephen and a possible 'prayer walk' when people stroll through the local area, praying both for that area and for the Church across Lancashire.

"This period of enrichment and experience will lead into the Great Eucharistic Prayer and administration of Holy Communion, and the renewal of our commitment to Christ and His Church," the Bishop said in a letter to all authorised clergy, lay workers and Readers. "Individuals, families and church families will be welcomed equally."

Special programmes will cater for children and young people "and their commitment and contributions will be celebrated in our concluding community Eucharist," the Bishop added.
The timing of the day is: overall, 10 am to 3.30 pm. The service starts at 11.00 am: Lunch break with discussion groups 12.30 pm: The service resumes with the Offertory and commitment to ministry at 2.00 pm.

Yes, we know it clashes with our Ecumenical Walk of Witness. I’ve volunteered to represent the parish and will welcome anyone else who wishes to come: if you are interested let me know so I can let them know!

News from Holy Trinity School
First and foremost we want to congratulate Ian Cookson on becoming the next head-teacher at our sister school at Mere Brow. It was lovely to share the page with him in the February magazine and hear all his news.

We are at present in Lent and have used the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education materials for our collective worship and have found them most stimulating and enlightening. We also have the Wednesday Worship in church with Father Nicholas. The children begin to understand, through these visits, the importance of the season of Lent, the close links we have we the church and the privilege of being able to worship in God's house which has just recently been marvellously restored.

We close for the end of the Spring term on 30th March so when you read this we will be enjoying not only a well-earned break but the wonderful season of Easter.

Our blessings to you all.
Sue

From the York Lent Course
Archbishop John Sentamu on Prayer:
God longs to have our dialogue with him and in any two-way dialogue it actually means that sometimes I need to be more listening and more still. So my view to most people, ‘come, because God longs to meet with you and listen more and talk less.’
As my mother used to say, ‘John, remember God gave you two eyes, two ears, one mouth - use them in proportion.’

Informal Walking Group Easter Monday April 9th
Assemble at Sollom Canal Bridge (foot of Lock Lane) to leave at 10.30 pm. This is a very small car park, so please double up wherever possible, or you may have to park up in Sollom itself and walk an extra quarter mile!
We cross the Douglas at Red Bridge (which is now painted green) turn up the Yarrow, then up the Lostock and along Wymott Brook before turning back into Bretherton for lunch at the Blue Anchor.
The food here is excellent and unstinted: you may wish to order the smaller optional sizes for some main courses. They also serve well kept real ales and good house wine.
We will return through Bretherton on back lanes and footpaths, the exact route back to Red Bridge depending on whether the footpaths have been re-instated across the autumn sown cereal crop.

Sponsored Walk for Christian Aid “Anti-flood ducks” appeal (see above) with the Informal Walking Group May Day Bank Holiday Monday May 7th
We start the walk at 10.30 am. Meet at the car park for St Mary the Virgin, Eccleston (by kind permission of the Rector) which is opposite the church lych-gate in Towngate, Eccleston (B5250), just over the river bridge.
We will walk upstream alongside the river Yarrow along part of Eccleston’s Millennium Walk, swinging back to the Original Farmers Arms for lunch (say, 12.30). The food, the real ales, and the wines here are all excellent - and tea and coffee also available. Feel free to meet us for lunch, or to use this as the start or end of the walk, as it is only a few minutes walk back down Towngate to the cars.
After lunch we follow field paths to Syd Brook Lane, the lane to the Mill at Croston and then alongside the Yarrow again all the way back to the cars. This section passes a point where sand martins nest and butterflies are often seen. Sponsorship forms available in advance - but come whether sponsored or not.

Co-op Fair Trade wines from Chile
The Co-op Chilean wines are made at the Los Robles Co-operative in the Curico Valley Chile. This was originally set up in 1939 after a devastating earthquake killed over 10,000 people. Fairtrade accreditation was gained in 2004 and the community has focussed its funds primarily on three areas:-
EDUCATION English courses and higher education grants for children and workers at Los Robles.
HOUSING Urgent repairs and extensions are needed for many of the basic adobe homes which are often too small for the large families who live in them
SUSTAINABILITY Helping individual farmers to buy vines for new vineyards, and viticulturalists to advise them on their first harvest - which will one day go into the wines we buy.

From previous magazines
Parish Jottings Archdeacon Fletcher April 1905
The satisfactory attendances at our Lenten Services, to which reference was made in last month’s magazine, was maintained to the end; the nightly meetings during Holy Week, and the morning and evening services on Good Friday, all being attended by congregations both numerous and devout; and when the nature of those services and addresses is remembered and the close attention given to them by those present, one cannot but hope that real good was done.
… and April 1906
Our Lenten Services this year have been on the whole well-attended, considerably more than 100 persons being present at several of the Wednesday evening services; …
