The
Parish Church of
HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish
"Webzine" September 2005
From
the Rectory
Dear
Friends,
I,
like many of you I suspect, have been away for part of
the summer and although it was by no means a ‘bus
man’s’ holiday, I can’t walk past a
church without stopping to have a look in. I was pleasantly
surprised to find so many churches still unlocked in Cornwall,
and if the visitor’s books and prayer request boards
are to be believed, I was by no means the only one calling
in. It made me reflect again on how sad it is that so
many churches, including Holy Trinity in the heart of
our village, are locked for most of the week. And it makes
me wonder if there is anything we can do to change this.
In
this day and age when we all have to be careful about
securing our houses I can well understand why so many
church buildings are locked. But crime statistics show
that locked churches are more likely to be vandalised
or stolen from than open churches. Just a few miles away
in Bretherton and in Longton the churches are often left
unlocked during the day, and people do call in to have
a few quiet moments to reflect and pray.
Parish
churches are holy places. They are sacred spaces where
God and his people meet. They are visible reminders in
stone and glass and wood of the presence of God in the
midst of our world. What sort of message does a locked
church give to the wider community?
I
wonder how many people in their search for God have tried
the locked doors of the churches in our land. How many
of them have turned around presuming that the answers
to their questions must lay somewhere else, that perhaps
the Christian God is for paid up Sunday members only,
and they are not yet ready for that.
I
would like to see more use being made of our parish church
during the week – particularly for worship and private
prayer. I am trying to discern how this might happen –
if you have any thoughts, please share them with me.
With
love and prayers,
Fr Nicholas

ROSE
QUEEN DAY 2005
We
had made up our minds that this year the weather was going
to be kind to us, and Father Nicholas assured me he had
had a word, so we got on with setting up outside. The
clouds came and went, as did the sunshine, and we were
given a dry if not cool afternoon. It was a pleasure to
see so many retinues along with their friends and families.
Lisa,
the retiring queen and her retinue have been wonderful
ambassadors for our Church and Sunday school. A substantial
amount of money has been raised from Lisa’s fundraising
and I know the retinue all had great fun working together.
My own daughter Vicki was crowned by Mrs Janet Lynd and
I hope she is able to carry out her duties with dignity
and pride. I know we, as a retinue, have had a great deal
of fun already!
This
year as usual we were spoilt for choice in which stall
to visit first. We were offered a magnificent range of
locally grown produce, delicious home-made cakes and incredible
bargains on the white elephant stall. Outside we were
offered unusual plants, refreshing pop and crisps, ice
cream and candy floss, and for the first time in many
years scrumptious strawberries and cream The tombola and
raffle tempted with many lovely prizes, and the bottle
stall, coconut shy, pony rides, face painting, hair braiding,
fairground rides, archery and greasy pole guaranteed plenty
of fun. The refreshments were second to none.
We
were treated to some delightful entertainment during the
afternoon, the Morris dancers to a very catchy tune we
have all come to know, and the maypole dancers who do
incredibly well given their tender age, which is a testament
to their trainers. The 'It’s a Knockout' was great
fun – thank you to the teams.
Inside
the school hall our two church schools, Holy Trinity and
Mere Brow set Father Nicholas the impossible task in judging
the Arts and Crafts competition, it seems each year the
entries get better and better.
We
have many people to thank for their help and support in
donations of goods and help on the day. To each and every
one of you we are truly grateful and we hope you will
help us again next year. The committee worked very hard
not only on the day but also for weeks before, without
their commitment to this village tradition we would not
be able to carry on before. This year we were able to
raise in excess of £1,500, which will be distributed
evenly between class teachers to enable them to buy something
the ‘budget’ doesn’t run to.
Finally
on a personal note, I would like to thank the committee
for all the help and support shown to me during the early
part of June when sadly my Mum died.
Thank
you all,
Karen Rimmer
Mrs
Eatough’s 100th birthday service
“Beautiful”
sighed Muriel Eatough in the silence following the Blessing
at the end of the Eucharist on Wednesday 17th August.
Around forty members of the Mothers’ Union and the
Choir had come together to pay tribute to her example
and witness over the years, and to celebrate her commitment
both to the MU and to the choir.
Fr
Nicholas celebrated from the Book of Common Prayer, we
sang two of her favourite hymns, and the choir gave her
one of her favourite anthems: Lead Me Lord.
The
service was followed by tea and refreshments in the Parish
Room. Many thanks to Pat Heap and the MU committee and
members for setting up this ‘beautiful’ event
and organising the tea, to Fr Tom for the music, and Fr
Nicholas for the service.
THE
LEPROSY MISSION
I now have catalogues available with all the fascinating
goods and cards: catch me at church or ring me on 813267
to see a copy.
The
catalogues will be available at the coffee session after
the 10 am service on Wednesday 5th October, and there
will also be a display of Christmas cards to buy at once
or to help you make your mind up which you would like
to order.
Before
then, I shall be speaking to the All Saints MU on Tuesday
20th September at 7.30 pm. I will talk about TLM generally
and about the used stamps and other collectables which
raise so much money both for the direct treatment of the
disease and to help rehabilitate cured sufferers. Thelma
says any interested Tarleton members are very welcome.
Please
keep dropping in your used stamps etc and ask me for a
new L-box whenever yours is full!
Thank
you all very much Sue Wells
LIBYA
calling!
Just a quick note to let you know what is happening over
here, we got back all right but they almost did not let
Stuart in. It seems he was not on my visa: we got him
in, but he now has his own passport, just to be on the
safe side.
Stuart passed his music exams, he got a pass in piano
and merits in Theory and Singing, he is very pleased with
the results.
We all enjoyed meeting the new vicar, he seems very nice
and Stuart really enjoyed singing again with the choir.
