The Parish Church of
HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish "Webzine" August 2005

From the Rectory.

Dear Friends,
As I write the parish schools are just about to break up for the summer, and of course that means the end of an era for the pupils in year six. A special deanery leaver’s service has been held at the cathedral to mark the occasion and the schools will be having their own farewell services here in the parish. Recently I spent an informative afternoon looking round Tarleton High School, where many of our young people will be starting in September. I was made to feel most welcome by the head teacher and staff and I hope that much good may come from this. Some of our other school leavers will be going on to Bishop Rawstorne College, where I shall catch up with them as their Year 8 chaplain. Please pray for our young people at this exciting, if somewhat daunting, time.

Once the children in year six have left our parish schools, and out grown Sunday School, we as a Church are presented with a harder challenge as to how we can create new and different opportunities to involve the young people and their families in the life of Holy Trinity. Some of you are working hard on this front already, and I have been delighted by the response there has been to the suggestion of re-forming a youth group. There are some exciting possibilities to look into and God willing we should be up and running in the autumn.

As many of you go away on holiday over the next few weeks just remember that God goes with you. Don’t be tempted to miss Church or not to say your prayers just because you’re having a break from everything else. Find a Church where you’re staying and experience worshipping with a different Christian community. See how God is at work elsewhere in his creation and come back safely, refreshed and perhaps with some fresh ideas.

With love and prayers,
Fr Nicholas

MOTHERS’ UNION: August
This is a quiet month regarding meetings, but we have a very special occasion. Mrs Muriel Eatough, one of our indoor members, will celebrate her 100th birthday on the 20th August, and we send her our love and warmest congratulations. We also give thanks for her long association with the Mothers’ Union as an active member of our branch.
Meetings will resume in September with the Prayer Group on Monday 5th at 2.00 pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and the first evening meeting of the new session will be on Wednesday 7th at 7.30 pm in the Parish room.
Pat Heap

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Muriel Eatough is 100 years old on Saturday August 20th. The family are holding a tea party for her on that afternoon, in the communal room at Gorse Close, and would be pleased to see any of Muriel’s friends, for a cup of tea, from 2 pm onwards. NO GIFTS PLEASE, by Muriel’s own request.

DEEP THANKS and keep up the good work.
Dorothy Redfern was recently at a concert in a church in a neighbouring village and her eye was caught by a tiny, tiny baby in a pram.
“How old is she?” “Three months – she was born in the special unit at Preston.” “Oh, our Mothers’ Union knits small garments for them and the similar unit at Ormskirk.” “Please thank them deeply and tell them to continue – the clothes have been incredibly useful.”

SOCIAL TEAM DATES

Harvest Quiz Night: Friday 30th September

THE RT. REV. JOHN SENTAMU, ARCHBISHOP OF YORK ELECT
“The appointment of John Sentamu as Archbishop of York is political correctness gone gloriously sane” said the editorial in The Guardian, going on to say it is “a bold and imaginative gesture by the Church of England which deserves to be rewarded with success.” The leader continues: “Dr Sentamu has mastered two different careers as a lawyer, and then as a priest, in two different continents, and he stood up to tyrannical bullies – whether Idi Amin or the Daily Mail – in both of them. That a black immigrant and refugee from persecution should rise on his merits to the second most senior position in the Church of England is testimony to the creative imagination of an institution which is not normally credited with the quality.” Well yes, except of course priesthood is not a career!

John Sentamu first worked as a priest in a remand centre, in several parishes in the south London area, then was Priest-in-charge of a joint benefice which had yet another parish added to it – so understands pastoral reorganisation from within! - before becoming first (suffragan) Bishop of Stepney and most recently Bishop of Birmingham.

As well as his well publicised activities with the Stephen Lawrence enquiry and the Damilola Taylor review, he was deeply involved with the archbishops’ Springboard evangelical initiative.

“A man of energy and passion for the gospel … a man of prayer … someone who lights up the word of God for the world around him.” So said the bishop of Hull, adding: “He challenges boundaries and fixed ideas about the world, the Church and the Christian Gospel - and he's great fun too.”

The Leprosy Mission
Sue has been appointed a trading partner for TLM and so now has summer catalogues for you to look at. These are full of gift ideas, greeting cards and books. There are gardening helps, things for children, travel items, and much, much more – browse and enjoy.

Please do save your post cards and stamps over the summer – we hope to have a special day in the autumn to talk about how the stamps raise money while sitting round trimming and sorting. The summer catalogue includes a pack of mixed stamps suitable for beginners which has been put together from donated stamps.

We will also pick up any unwanted albums or collections of postcards or stamps if you can’t get them to church: otherwise leave small packets in the box at the rear of church or large ones straight to us at the 10.30 on Sundays or often at the 10 am on Wednesdays.
Thank you very much

Parking at St Mary’s
As we move towards Old Church Sunday and the other events at St Mary’s, can I please remind you of the only SAFE and LEGAL way to park at the Old Church?
That is to come down the hill on Windgate from the A59/A565/ Church Road traffic lights, and use the right turn lane provided to line you up with the ‘hearse lay-by.’ Please try to park so others can squeeze by. Don’t forget that if you press the button on the post by the wall you get a whole green phase on the traffic lights to yourself to drive out again – no need to chance it.

Whatever you used to do, it is in fact illegal to drive straight across from Coe Lane – there is a prominent ‘no-entry’ sign facing Coe Lane. And if you park in the ‘D’ shape outside the gates, it blocks in other people who have parked correctly in the slip-way, and obstructs the cycle path.

Please take care – we don’t need more funerals that badly.

ROSE QUEEN CROWNING and FIELD DAY
The weather was kind – no rain and not over hot – lots of people enjoyed themselves and at least £1500 was raised for our two church primary schools.

A fuller report with thanks next month from Karen Rimmer on behalf of the Rose Queen team.

Next day the sun shone as the Queens and Retinues helped lead the worship at the 10.30 Church Family Eucharist and as the congregation enjoyed wine and shortbread after the service.

A prayer (Common Worship Daily Prayer, after Ps 108)
In times of terror, O God,
give us boldness to act with courage, yet with mercy,
for you rule the nations with the sword of truth;
in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

MAKE POVERTY HISTORY?
The G8 Gleneagles summit has come and gone – and what was achieved?

“10 out of 10 on aid” said Geldof.

“A vastly disappointing result” said Christian Aid. “Millions of campaigners from all over the world have been led to the top of the mountain, shown the view, and now we are being frogmarched down again.”

Bullet points:-
AID:
• An additional $50bn in aid by 2010, including $25bn a year more to Africa.
• 100% cancellation of debts of eligible indebted countries.
• Action on ‘education for all’, HIV in Africa, also TB and Malaria worldwide.
TRADE:
• Substantially reduce trade-distorting domestic support
• Eliminate all forms of export subsidies
• Work vigorously for the early implementation of the UN convention against corruption.
• Encourage companies to adopt anti-bribery compliance programmes.
Sounds good? Well, it is much better than all previous G8s – and thanks to Gordon Brown for setting up the inter-governmental ministerial pressure and Tony Blair for leading from the front – but:-
Note the dates – or the lack of them.
• More aid for Africa: now? No, by 2010.
• Reduce domestic support and eliminate subsidies? No target dates at all.
Let them know this is only a start – not an end.

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY WALK: 29th AUGUST
Start at 10.30 am from the church car park of St Mary’s, Eccleston in Towngate just over the Yarrow bridge (SD516179) by kind permission of the Rector. The walk is a near figure eight shape, mostly in the Yarrow river meadows, with lunch at the excellent Original Farmers Arms from around 12 noon. Mostly flat, with stiles, and some uneven patches due to stock in fields. Dogs on leads, please. Half a walk quite feasible or join us for lunch.

Terror?
Chesterton said it and we sing it (hymn 492):-
From all that terror teaches, from lies of tongue and pen,
From all the easy speeches that comfort cruel men,
from sleep and from damnation, deliver us, good Lord.
The Mission Action Plan Prayer
God of new beginnings, we pray that you will transform your church as you renew us by your love.
Give us vision for the journey that we may travel light, and live increasingly by faith.
Inspire, enliven and empower us, so that along the Way we may be sustained by the life of Christ in ourselves, in one another, and in the world. Amen

And finally – a little light relief
Tales from the TIC quoted from the Upper Wensleydale Newsletter.
• “I’ve telephoned the B&B and there’s no answer; why is that?”
• “Some friends of ours stayed in a Yorkshire guest house last year – can you tell us which one?”

Linda Smith, on The News Quiz, R4:
“I don’t do the lottery, so I’m only marginally less likely to win it than people who do.”
