The Parish Church of
HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish "Webzine" June 2005

From the Rectory June 2005

Dear friends,
I have really enjoyed my first few weeks here in the parish, getting to know new people and finding my way around. I had reckoned that it would be about a ten minute walk to church from the Rectory, but I always end up meeting people on the way, and I haven’t managed it in under twenty minutes yet! And what marvellous opportunities these chance meetings can be.

One thing many people have asked me is, “Are you getting settled in?” and in one sense I suppose I am. Tarleton is certainly beginning to feel very much like home – no doubt it will take me a while to get used to all the rhythms of parish life – but I do feel the place and the people becoming more familiar to me week by week, and in that sense there’s nothing wrong with feeling ‘at home’. I have known priests who have struggled in parishes because they have not allowed themselves to become fully part of the local community.

But for me, and for all who follow Jesus’ commandments to love God and Neighbour, we must never allow ourselves to feel too settled in our ways of life, because God does need us to minister to his world. There may well be people and situations which need our help and prayer but which we may avoid or ignore because we are not prepared to make the sacrifices of time, money or talents which are being asked of us. We must always remain open to God, and that, at times, can be decidedly unsettling.

At the recent Deanery Visitation when our Wardens were sworn into office, the Bishop of Blackburn presented to the P.C.C. his Mission Action Plan for the diocese. It is a simple frame work to help each parish reflect on what it is currently doing, to affirm and build on its strengths, to identify any areas of weakness and to address them in a positive way. In the near future we will look more closely at the Mission Action Plan in this parish but in the meantime I would be very grateful if you would all begin to reflect and pray about what the strengths and needs of this parish are, and to share your thoughts with me and with others.
With love and prayers Fr Nicholas

PCC meeting on Thursday 9th June.
Rolling Bible Study is pausing for the summer on Thursday evenings, after the June 2nd session. New members will be welcome, at 7.45 for 8 at either 14 The Chimes or 8 Willow Hey, when study resumes in the autumn for the last 8 sessions on St Mark’s gospel.

Meet St Mary’s Trustees
Some of the Trustees of the Churches Conservation Trust – who maintain St Mary’s - are visiting St Mary’s at 9.30 am on Thursday 9th June and will be happy to talk to any parishioners who wish to meet them.

Services at St Mary’s
Old Church Sunday – with all the services at St Mary’s – will be on Sunday 28th August this year.

The Trustees are happy for us to have services there at other times of the year, and the first was on Monday 2nd May when we celebrated SS Philip & James.

There will be a Eucharist held at St Mary’s at 10 am on Monday 15th August, which is a feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

For those who can’t get to daytime weekday services, the alternate festival of the BVM on Thursday September 8th will see a Eucharist at 7.30 pm at St Mary’s.

Fairtrade drinks!
I promised to let you know about the Co-op Fair Trade Rosé. My first bottle was uninspiring, but trying it again more recently as rosé should be drunk – sitting outside in the sunshine, relaxing in the garden with a glass of chilled wine – I was more impressed. It’s a Merlot from Chile, grown and made in the Curico Valley by the Los Robles co-operative, who encourage small scale farmers. Fairly dry for a rosé, it is pleasantly refreshing. Normal price £4.99, look out for special offers. Perversely, our local Co-op branches are withdrawing it just as the warm weather comes round!
At the same price the Chilean Carmenère full-bodied Red is still well worth scanning the Co-op shelves for and enjoying drinking. (The Rosé label says ‘drink within 6 months’ and the Red ‘within 12 months’ - well within, in my experience!)
The Co-op beer shelves are also sporting a Fair Trade label, this time being the use of Fairtrade honey from Chile in a Honey Ale, called Bumble Bee. This is brewed for the CWS by The Freeminer Brewery, based in the Forest of Dean. It is a delicious sweetish beer that could go well with sweeter foods, even perhaps a dessert.
If you just want the delicious Chilean Fairtrade honey – it’s on the shelves in Booths.

And talking about drink ….
A suburban church had regular lunches and other functions where wine was served, and decided to open an account at the local off-licence. Their Treasurer was given a form to fill in, one designed for a standard business. Most of the questions posed no problem, but he paused for thought over “Date business founded?” Inspiration struck, and he boldly inked in “33 AD.”

Tea Party Day! aka Walking Day and Ecumenical walk of Witness
The time is approaching once again with the start of Maypole and Morris Dancing practices for us to think of June and the annual Ecumenical Walk of Witness as well as Rose Queen Day.
As I am sure most of you will have heard, the Walk of Witness will be a combined one with Hesketh Bank as we arranged for the Millennium.
The theme for this year is the “I Am’s” of Jesus (I Am the Way, I am the Resurrection, etc.) Do join us for the service at 1.45 p.m. prompt on the school field, followed by walking with the ‘ladies and gentlemen of Tarleton’.
We will meet the Hesketh Bank party at Our Lady’s and join with them as we Walk to Tarleton High School for a short service. Drinks will be provided for everyone prior to our return in procession to Holy Trinity.
Because of these arrangements our Maypole and Morris Dancers will not dance on this occasion but will be part of the procession. They will dance at Rose Queen and they have been invited to All Saints Rose Queen on the 2nd July and Chapel Lane Sunshine Corner Rose Queen on the 16th July.
The second Saturday in June - Saturday 11th June 2005 is a very special day – do join us for a very traditional Ecumenical Walk of Witness.

As summer comes on, some more Tales from the TIC quoted from the Upper Wensleydale Newsletter.

• “Were the Yorkshire Dales in the Southern Hemisphere 100 million years ago?” In case you’re wondering, no.
• Looking at map: “Can we walk these thick blue lines?” Only with the aid of wellies or waders.

ROSE QUEEN CROWNING and FIELD DAY 2005
On June 25th, we will be holding our annual Rose Queen Crowning and field Day. This year’s rose queen is my daughter Vicki Rimmer, who is absolutely delighted to have been chosen to represent Holy Trinity Church & Sunday School. Vicki will be crowned by a wonderful lady know to you all, Mrs Janet Lynd.

This year – hopefully – we will be blessed with a fine day. But whatever the weather we have a wonderful afternoon planned. The gates open at 1.30 pm and the crowning begins at 2.00 pm. Entrance is £1 per adult, accompanied children free.

Come along to be entertained by our local children, be served delicious cakes and freshly brewed cups of tea, buy your fresh fruit and veg, cakes and biscuits or maybe a gadget or two from the white elephant stall, all whilst helping to raise funds for our two church schools.

Any donations of goods or for help on the day will be gratefully received (books included on the white elephant stall, but no electrical goods or clothing, please.)

A message from Rose Queen Lisa
Thank you to my retinue and all the helpers at my family bingo. Thank you to all who came to support us. We raised £305 with a bit more to come, for NSPCC. Many thanks to everyone.

Informal Walking Group – May Day Bank Holiday
As this was the transferred Saints’ Day of SS Philip & James, Fr Nicholas happily arranged to have the Eucharist at St Mary’s before we set off. Alas, he had been summoned to a meeting and so couldn’t join us as he had hoped. We were twenty in total as we walked down the hill, some from Rufford as well as our congregation, some from Longton and from Burscough who had enjoyed the Easter Monday walk and happily returned for more.
The walk up the Douglas at low tide took us past some modern farming practice: the field had several tens of thousands of pounds of agri-equipment in it, as each section was in turn ploughed, treated by what seemed to be an enormous shovel and sieve, and then seeded – all in one session.
As we went along we saw heron and green plovers, and later heard and saw snipe. The crossing of the Croston Road gave a distant glimpse of the regular bank holiday tail back from the A59, seen again before and after lunch. We rather slid under the railway to Rufford – accumulated tidal mud – to walk just a short way on road to the canal. Rufford Old Hall must have been packed – its car park certainly was – as we strolled behind it watching the ducks with their clusters of ducklings. At Spark Bridge we went under the tail back from the junction and then had to cross it on the level on the over-bridge to reach Spark Lane and the Rufford Arms. We were joined for the excellent lunch by two from All Saints. The close of the lunch break was enlivened by the sudden appearance of 27 horse buggies in the car park, apparently on a run out from Mawdesley.
Ferocious rain and hail suddenly hit us as we returned, fortunately from behind, the wind pushing up 6 inch waves down the canal. Three left us at Sollom bridge having summoned a chauffeur by mobile phone, while the rest trudged on as wet as we have ever been – with the possible exception of the Queen’s Jubilee Tuesday walk.

The Mission Action Plan Prayer
God of new beginnings, we pray that you will transform your church as you renew us by your love.
Give us vision for the journey that we may travel light, and live increasingly by faith.
Inspire, enliven and empower us, so that along the Way we may be sustained by the life of Christ in ourselves, in one another, and in the world. Amen
