The Parish Church of
HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish "Webzine" April 2005

A letter from The Church Wardens April 2005
Dear Friends,
By the time you are reading this, we will have enjoyed the Easter Celebrations for which we thank our visiting Clergy and Father Tom for being able to maintain the level of services usual at Holy Trinity.

This period coincides with a very busy time for our Parish, both with the arrangements for the Annual Parish Meeting which will be held on Sunday 3rd April 2005, and also with the Licensing of the Rev’d Nicholas Davis to Holy Trinity. If you have not already indicated that you will be attending the Licensing on Wednesday 13th April 2005 at 7.30 p.m., please let us know as soon as possible in order to allow for the seating arrangements and refreshments.

As the Interregnum draws to a close, we are looking forward to welcoming Father Nicholas, who will take over the day to day running of the Parish. The period since Father Tony’s leaving has been a very interesting, challenging and rewarding experience for both of us and we would like to take this opportunity of expressing our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their help and support.

It is on an optimistic note that we end this letter, and sincerely thank you all for the spirit of co-operation and understanding we have experienced over the past few months – we are sure this will continue and grow as the life of Holy Trinity evolves.

We thank you for your prayers and support and ask for you to continue to remember us and Father Nicholas, as he adjusts to his new life within our Parish.

Brian and Keith

Thank you to the wardens for arranging for these clergy to visit, both the active retired and the diocesan post holders.
And thank you to Rev Tom Taylor for all the 8 am Sunday services, the Church Family Services, and the Baptisms.

A special Thank You to both Canon Jim Burns and the Rev Richard Plant for the Wednesday morning Eucharists and for taking funerals during the vacancy.
Richard has done the lion’s share of the work and deserves our very special thanks.

ANNUAL MEETING
Sunday April 3rd, after the 10.30 service, we have the Annual Parochial Church Meetings.
We elect the Wardens first. This year, we then elect the Deanery Synod Representatives (for three years) and one third of the PCC (also for three years.) The forms for nominations will be at the back of the church. To be proposed (or to propose) you must be on the electoral roll.

AWARDS TO CHORISTERS
On 22nd January in the Cathedral four of our Choristers received awards. David Bromilow was given the Bishop of Blackburn's Long Service Award. This is for Choristers who have served over 40 years in choirs. Dave had a few to spare in his record, but I promised not to say how many!
At the same service Lisa and Daniel Currie and Bethany Hodgkins all received the Archdeacons' Award. This is for young people who have sung for at least four years in a choir and who have an attendance record of 95% over the six months before their names were submitted for the award. They had to spend all day training at the Cathedral, and helped form the choir which sang Evensong.

TO EVERYONE AT CHURCH
Thank you for your prayers, support and messges of sympathy. Being surrounded by your love has made our very sad loss a little easier to bear.
From Mary Mayor, Evelyn, Gwen and Stephen and families.

The family of the late Silvester Midgley would like to thank all the kind relatives and friends who sent messages of condolence, sympathy cards and donations to the Holy Trinity Church.
Your kind thoughts and prayers helped to support us. May God bless you all.

Our Prayer Group will meet on Monday 4 April at 2.00 pm in the Parish Room, when we will also observe Lady Day, which has been transferred to this date this year.
Wednesday 13 April is the Institution of our new Priest at 7.30 pm and so the talk advertised in our programme will take place on a future occasion.
At our afternoon meeting on Wednesday 27 April at 2.00 pm a representative from Hotter Shoes will come to speak to us. Members are invited to bring a friend and we extend an invitation to any member of the congregation who would like to join us.
The Diocese has arranged a meeting for us to go along and find out more about HIV/AIDS on Monday 25 April at Clayton Brook Community Church at 7.30 pm.
With the approach of summer days we look forward to meeting all our members.

LOST
If anyone has knowledge of the whereabouts of an album containing memorabilia relating to the Reunion of the Evacuees from Liverpool, which was held in the C or E School in September 1989 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their coming to Tarleton, please contact Mary Melling (or ring Ian on 813267)

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
This year’s service was compiled by the women of Poland. One of the hymns was sung partly in Polish by two young Polish men working in local horticulture.
Everyone learnt to say May God bless you in Polish:-
“Szczesc Boze” pronounced Shtensht Borijher.

Christian Aid Week, 15-21 May 2005
We believe in life before death

What?
A week of fundraising, prayer and action for the world’s poorest people.

Why?
Because poverty is a scandal, and because we believe in life before death.

Who?
A movement of 4,000 local organisers, 20,000 supporting churches and 300,000 dedicated collectors.

How?
Through the UK’s biggest house-to-house collection, millions taking action for trade justice, a national advertising campaign, and thousands of special events and church services.

Can you help?

We believe in life before death. We have a vision of how the world can be without poverty. By giving and by taking action for trade justice, you can help make that vision a reality this Christian Aid Week.

Will you help?

INFORMAL WALKING GROUP: May Day Walk
Monday 2nd May. Meet at the Old Church to leave at 10.30 am. We will walk down the line of the Douglas to Rufford – and the tide is right to make it under the railway bridge! – and back up the canal past the rear of Rufford Old Hall to lunch at the Rufford Arms – hopefully by 12.30 but by 1 pm for sure. Return down the canal towpath. Almost entirely flat, a few stiles. 4 miles out, 2+ back.
Queries? Ring Ian on 01772 813267 or 07767 638 996 on the day.

Plus ca change …
We found a copy of my editorial for the magazine in July 1993 – yes, I’ve been editor for at least 12 years! It talked about the PCC sending out the invitations for the Induction service for our new priest.
“Would there be enough space for the most important people of all - the parishioners? … Seats will be reserved for the “official” guests. Please don’t be offended if these include your regular seats – just arrive early and tuck in elsewhere.”
This time, we have our own ‘I’m coming’ list at the back of church and a reserved bloc for those who have done.

The Mission Action Plan Prayer
God of new beginnings, we pray that you will transform your church as you renew us by your love.
Give us vision for the journey that we may travel light, and live increasingly by faith.
Inspire, enliven and empower us, so that along the Way we may be sustained by the life of Christ in ourselves, in one another, and in the world. Amen

Out of the mouths …
Having just done some primary school assemblies, both at Tarleton and at Mere Brow, I loved this tale.
The young, enthusiastic teacher asked the massed pupils:
“If I sold my house and my car, had a car-boot sale and gave all my money to the church, would I get into heaven?”
“No!” they all answered.
“If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the churchyard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would I get into heaven?”
“No!” came the chorus again.
“Well, how can I get to heaven?”
Into the sudden silence came the voice of a five-year old boy. “You’ve got to be dead.”
