The Parish Church of
HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish "Webzine" September 2004

Dear Friends,

This is the last “Rector’s Letter” that I shall write to you, for the October Magazine will contain vital information from the Churchwardens and others who have the responsibility for guiding this Parish in the months ahead, coping with what is known as an “Interregnum”, which means “between reigns” - I don’t know if I have reigned at Tarleton - its been a hard, and at times a very rewarding sphere of ministry which Irene and I have enjoyed immensely.

The decision to move on and take on what is probably my most adventurous ministerial role so far was not taken lightly, as I had fully expected to be here until my retirement age at 65. However, the opportunity has arisen, and I think, under the guiding of the Holy Spirit, that I have made the right decision, both for the Parish, which after eight years could do with a younger hand at the tiller with all the opportunities that are here as Tarleton expands, and new ideas and ways of working to promote the Kingdom of God and explore new ways of ministry, and for me to go and work in a place, and in a Church which is more suited to my ecclesiastical outlook than the Church of England is at the present time, and minister in my beloved Cyprus, and maybe help in a small way to bring some hope of reconciliation in that tragically divided country.

It is very much “goodbye” because when we leave in October we will not be returning to the U.K. except for occasional holiday and special events, I am saying “goodbye” to the Church of England to join another Anglican Church, but one with a slightly different ethos, and to work in an area which is 98% Muslim, so it is a mammoth change.

So now I commend you all to the saving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, please pray for me, as I shall pray for you each day, and may you grow in the grace and love of God, revealed in the Scriptures that I have tried to open to you, and maintaining the “faith once delivered to the saints” in all its Catholic fullness, using the sacramental means of grace to save your souls, which faith needs guarding and preserving - there are enemies to it everywhere, even in Tarleton.

Thank you for the privilege of ministering amongst you, and for the beauty of your Parish Church, which I have tried to cherish and enhance and in which I have delighted in leading your worship.

By the way, contrary to a lot of speculation I am not retiring!

May God richly bless you in all your endeavours for Him.

With love in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Anthony Jeynes.

PRAY CONSTANTLY,

AND FOR ALL THINGS,

GIVING THANKS TO GOD.

1 Thessalonians 5.16-18

GOD SPEED
To Pat and Lew Stott, who have now moved “East” - we wish them well In their new home in Earby, and thank them for so much work in many areas of the life of Holy Trinity. The holes they filled need to be plugged - choir, cleaning, Old Church, Churchyard to name but a few. They will be back for “Old Church Sunday” and we can then express our thanks in a tangible way.

THANK YOU
To June Taylor for making, while on holiday, a kneeler to fill the gap along the Communion Rail which matches the rest of the kneelers.
Well done June, another excellent job.

HERITAGE WEEKEND
The “Old Church” of St. Mary will be open on Saturday and Sunday, September 11th and 12th, from 10 am – 5 pm.

There are a lot of things to do to make this happen: -
1. Church Sitters - a rota of people who can be at the church for an hour or so through the two days. Please add your name to the list which will be at the back of the Church from the last weekend in August.
2. Help with the floral decorations, and gifts of English country flowers - please see Irene Jeynes and Eva Eccleston. The decoration of the church will be on Friday, September 10th
3. The loan of local pictures and memorabilia to mount a small exhibition – offers to the Rector, please.

On Sunday 12th at 4.30 pm there will be “Your Favourite Hymns.”

A prayer suitable for parish farewells

May the Lord bless your ears,
that you may hear his Word.
May the Lord bless your eyes.
that you may see his light.
May the Lord bless your lips,
that you may respond to his love.
May the Lord bless your heart,
that he may dwell there for ever.
May the Lord bless your shoulders,
that you may carry his cross
and live always by its saving power.
Amen

Vacancies, vacancies ….

1. Rector. Please pray for those who have the responsibility for choosing a new priest – and that it will be the right person to take the Parish forward. Locally, pray for the Wardens and the PCC; in the diocese for Archdeacon John, Bishop John and Bishop Nicolas; for the Master of St Peter’s college, our patron.
2. Church cleaning. Several volunteers already, but the more, the easier.
3. Help/ co-ordinator for church flowers: talk to Irene Jeynes this month.
4. Parish Magazine advertising. Talk to Irene Baybutt or Ian Wells
5. The Choir. All voices welcome, but we especially need adult males and young people. Contact Fr Tom. Did you see the research that showed that children who sing in choirs do better across their schoolwork in general? Or that singers and musicians live longer and are happier?
6. Prayer again. Please talk to Rod Bretherton about praying in a group, or at a special time, or in pairs or triplets. All our activities need prayer support, but especially our outreach and mission work.

If you can’t contact any of the above, ring Ian on 813267

Looking forward.

News from Sunday School
Our last Sunday School before the long summer holiday was a ‘Thank You’ occasion when I was able to say a special public thank you to all the people who make our children welcome each week. We were lucky in that Father Tony was able to spend some time with us, along with many parents and children.

We were treated to the final performances of the season of the Maypole and Morris Dancing routines and Retiring Queen Rebecca helped with the presentation of Certificates.

A special thank you must be said to everyone at Holy Trinity who sponsored us in May for the Deanery Sponsored Sing in aid of Derian House. We were able to send £310 from Tarleton and the Deanery Sunday School Teachers presented Derian House with the grand total of £1,157 at the beginning of July.

We shall be holding Sunday School as normal from 10.15 a.m. on Sunday 12th September and look forward to seeing both old and new faces!
Jean

‘Don’t be chatty’ was the Church Times headline over the report of a sermon by the Archbishop of York.
Dr Hope said that churches should be witnesses by “being” rather than “doing”. There was a danger that “we are becoming too much a busy Church and a chatty church at the expense of being an effective church … More than ever, people are looking for both for space and silence.”
