The Parish Church of
HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish "Webzine" November 2004

A letter from The Church Wardens

Dear Friends,
Now that the Interregnum has commenced, as promised in last month’s magazine we take this opportunity to bring you up to date with what is happening as we endeavour to appoint a new Rector.
The PCC, together with the wardens and a co-opted member of the parish, have been working very hard to complete all the necessary paper work required by the diocese. This has included producing a 'Parish Profile’, which not only paints a pen-picture of the parish of Tarleton, but indicates the qualities we believe the next Rector should possess. This has taken some considerable time to produce and we would wish to record our thanks to all involved.
The next stage, following receipt of the Profile and other documents is for the Bishop of Burnley to call a meeting. Known as a Section 12 meeting, it takes place between Bishop John, the Archdeacon of Blackburn, and the PCC. (A representative of the patron, the Area Dean, and the deanery lay chair are also invited.) Having made our views known to the Bishop in writing, this meeting is an opportunity for the PCC not only to endorse them but also to ensure that they are taken into account before a new appointment is made.
Hopefully this meeting will take place early in November. Following this meeting, we hope that a list of suitable candidates will be forthcoming quite quickly.
In the meantime we trust that you will support and welcome the visiting clergy who will be taking most of our midweek and 10.30 Sunday services.
Please continue to remember us in your prayers at this time.
Brian and Keith

ROUND AND ABOUT – FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

PARISH REGISTERS
will resume next month.

Parish Visiting Group
If you know of anybody who would welcome a visit,
? either because they are in hospital,
? or because they are confined to their home for whatever reason,
? or because they are new to the parish,
would you please fill in one of the slips at the back of the church and place it in the box or contact Pat Heap on 812991.

How much do you know about your faith?
Join us on Thursdays in November – Knowing the Father – a short course for those who are thinking about their belief. Full details in the weekly bulletin, but pencil in every Thursday in November (4th to 25th) NOW. This will be joint with our Methodist friends.

Vacancies, vacancies ….
1. Parish Magazine advertising supremo. Talk to Irene Baybutt or Ian Wells
2. The Choir. All voices welcome, but we especially need adult males and young people. Contact Fr Tom.
3. Prayer needed. Please talk to Rod Bretherton about praying in a group, or at a special time, or in pairs or triplets. All our activities need prayer support, but especially our outreach and mission work.

If you can’t contact any of the above, ring Ian on 813267

Many Visitors to St Mary's Old Church
Heritage Weekend was wetter this year than last, but around 180 people still visited Tarleton's Georgian gem. Decorated elegantly with wild flowers, and with memorabilia on display, the light, airy building was really appreciated by the visitors, many of whom had never been inside before.
Musicians from the congregation played (and pedalled!) the American organ at intervals throughout the weekend, and the whole event closed with the choir leading hymns chosen by those present in a 'Your favourite hymns' session at dusk on Sunday. This was the last occasion at which the Rev Tony Jeynes officially led an event in the Old Church, and he expressed his great enjoyment of the building over his eight years at Tarleton.

Farewell to Tony & Irene Sunday October 3rd
Following the 10.30 am Parish Eucharist – Tony’s last service – the school hall was crammed for the farewell lunch. One hundred and seventy seven was the warden’s count – and it certainly felt like that – and we had a superb buffet lunch served by The Blue Team, an efficient and enthusiastic mix of adults and our young churchgoers.
After the lunch, the wardens thanked both Tony and Irene and handed them our parish gifts: a threefold oil container, a superb new stole, and a handsome cheque. As well as our own parishioners, there were members of other Tarleton churches present, and the Rev Pat Aitchison presented Tony with a gift from the local Methodists.
Tony & Irene left the following day, and flew to Cyprus on the Tuesday. After a holiday, he takes up his new post as Priest in Charge of St Andrews, Kyrenia and Chaplain to Northern Cyprus, on November 1st and will be licensed on Wednesday 10th November at 4.00 pm. Please pray for him and Irene as they take up their new life.

What the Rector’s NOT doing …
In his short thank you speech at the farewell lunch, Tony told us about some of the things he’d had said to him since he announced his departure.
? No, he wasn’t retiring.
? Nor was he becoming Bishop of North Cyprus.
? Then there was the person who said to Irene “We know Tony’s going into the army: what are you doing?”

News from the school
We held an afternoon of entertainment for the Rector and Mrs Jeynes towards the end of September. The entertainment consisted of songs, poems and useful facts about Cyprus.
“My useful fact was how long the island of Cyprus was.” Zoe Lloyd (Y6) Other year six children found out for example that there was a donkey orphanage on the island and what the geographical landscape was like.
During the afternoon the Rector was quite emotional when Year 3 performed their version of “So long, farewell” and the Infant song “The rector is leaving”
The afternoon concluded with presents – a breadmaker, a cookery book, a bouquet of flowers, a card with all the children’s pictures and names and the “Jeynes’ emergency box” (containing water, sun cream, chocolate and packet of cat food).
We will miss the Rector and Mrs Jeynes but we have many fond memories of their visits to school.
Contributions by Lauren Whiteside and Zoe Lloyd. (Year 6)

THANKS FOR SCHOOL NEWS
I was delighted to open my October magazine and read news of Holy Trinity C.E. School. Long may these articles continue. I only wish I was young enough to be a pupil and enjoy life in your school!

Thoughts on Service and Leadership
Most of us are pretty quick to recognise the faults and failings of those who are leaders in the service of our Lord.
A favourite target is the person who stands in the pulpit, the priest or minister. However, few of us will acknowledge the responsibilities we have as church members to provide the prayerful support, application and co-operation that will help our ministers become the men and women God wants them to be. After all, God has made the minister the minister. Here are some points to ponder.
• Do we ever tell the ministers how much we appreciate their work?
• Do we ever thank them for their faithfulness to their Lord and to their work?
• Do we expect them to be superhuman? Are we aware of their tiredness, their emotional and physical limitations?
• Do we require of them the kind of dedication we would not require of ourselves?
• Do we pray regularly for our ministers? Do we ask the Lord to give them power in their preaching, faithfulness in their visitations and soul winning, and patience with their dealings with church members?
• Do we find ways of being a comfort and blessing to their families? Do we try to understand the special pressures that come from living in “a fishbowl”?
• Do we allow them privacy to be with their families, taking time away from the pressures of ministry?
• Do WE do the work God has given to us to do whether the minister notices or not?
• Can we allow for our ministers’ minor idiosyncrasies without developing them into major flaws every time a crisis develops in the church?
• Do we criticise our ministers in front of others?
• Do we listen to their preaching with an open heart, asking God to make the message practical in our own lives, and in the lives of others in our church?
• Do we ever ask them if there is anything we can do to make their burden lighter?

There are many ways in which we can bless not only our ministers but all those around us if we will abide in Jesus and let the Holy Spirit guide us.

Who …
Who do we blame now we don’t have a Rector?
Who’s going to carry the can?
Where is the visible presence in Tarleton
of those who follow The Man?

Legally speaking, it’s up to the wardens
to keep it all working out right;
to maintain the building and organise services,
making things ship-shape and tight.

There’s no-one to blame if things are not working,
no-one to blame except us.
If we didn’t notice and we didn’t mention …
there’s no point in making a fuss.

All of us stand as the church here in Tarleton,
all of us Jesus’s face;
Jesus’s ears, eyes, arms, hands and witness
showing his love in this place.

There’s no-one to blame, with or without Rector –
we’re all going to carry the can.
We are the visible presence in Tarleton
of those who follow The Man.

Grave humour
Spike Milligan finally got the headstone he had wanted, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph. Disputes within the comic’s family had delayed it, but now it stands in the churchyard of St Thomas, Winchelsea, with an inscription that says – as he had wished – “I told you I was ill.” There is only one snag. His last, best joke has been carved in Gaelic.
