The

HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish
"Webzine" August 2004
From
the Rector
Dear
Friends,
This
month of August gives everyone a little breathing space
- a number of people will be away on holiday, having a
well-earned rest; for may others, particularly in the
farming industry it is one of the busiest. At the end
of the month we have our annual visit to the ‘Old
Church’, when we worship on the site where generations
of Tarletonians have drawn close to God, and around which
many loved ones lie buried in our beautifully kept churchyard.
Our
Old Church, dedicated to the honour of Jesus’ mother,
the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of the village history
of Tarleton, and a symbol of how life in this area has
evolved from the quiet, scatted community when St. Mary’s
was built to present very large ‘commuter village’
that it has now become. Over the nine years I have been
your Rector, I have found the unadorned beauty of St.
Mary’s and the peacefulness of the churchyard to
be one of the bonuses of the place - the sense of being
close to God is very apparent there.
I
do hope that all of you will make the effort to come and
worship at St. Mary’s on ‘Old Church Sunday’,
August 22nd, and give thanks for the Christian inheritance
of our village.
Yours
in Jesus Christ.
Anthony
Jeynes.

On
On Sunday, July 4th the Rector announced that he had been
appointed Priest in Charge of St. Andrew, Kyrenia, and
Anglican Chaplain to North Cyprus. He will be taking up
this appointment, in the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf,
which is also part of the Episcopal (Anglican) Church
of Jerusalem and the Middle East in November, but he and

Welcome
At long last a new Area Dean has been appointed in succession
to the Reverend Andrew Holliday, who is now Parish Priest
at St. Peter, Darwen. He is the Reverend Chris Nelson,
Vicar of St. Mary, Penwortham, and Chaplain to Preston
North End. We wish him well and pray for him at this particularly
difficult time with five parishes vacant in the Deanery.
Growing
Larger
Mere Brow School has had a ‘make over’. The
‘old’ hall has been restored to use, with
new toilets and a separate entrance, also the Communion
Table which was in use when the School also was used as
’St. John’s Church’ has been returned,
and is now a focal point for Worship in the School. The
kitchen has been re-designed, and a new entrance, with
head teachers and school offices at the front of the building;
the ‘new’ hall will become a resource area.
This work has been largely the initiative of the head
teacher, Mrs. Margaret Jones, who possesses all the qualities
one could hope for in the leadership of a Church Aided
School.

to lead the intercessions? Training available for either,
many recommended books to help with leading the prayers.
Talk to the Rector (812614) or Ian (813267) if you feel
you can help. Thank you for our new volunteers –
more always welcome.

A message from Libya by Email
Hello Sue, Ian and All the Choir,
Just
a note to let you know how I am finding Libya, I have
just finished School and the weather is really hot about
105 in the shade.
I am missing Choir and Church as there is none here, please
let me know what is going on. I hope to be back in England
over the Christmas Period and will come a visit the choir.
Libya is different than what I expected, it is very nice
but Dad can't get used to not using his credit cards,
it is all cash here. Mum says just like when she was a
little girl.
There is not cinema here that shows english speaking films,
so we use satillite. The are not teashops, but Mum and
I have found a nice carfe to visit, I am getting used
to the food it is very spicey. School is different it
does not teach R.E. or Music, so you can see how much
I am missing home.
Mum and Dad send there regards and hope everyone is well.
Take Care. Miss you all,
Stuart

The choir. We’ve recently lost some young adults
– to college or exam workloads – and Stewart
to Libya. We have lost Lew from the bass line - he and
Pat have moved closer to their daughter. Anyone fancy
trying out their voices in joyous praise? Practice is
on Tuesday evenings.
Walking in Fellowship
The Cluster Parishes of All Saints, Hesketh with Becconsall,
St Mary’s, Rufford, and Holy Trinity, Tarleton.
The Informal Walking Group starts on August Bank Holiday
Monday (30th) from Rufford. Meet at the Railway/ Recycling
collection point Car Park ready to leave at 10.30 am.
We will walk round the back of Mawdesley via New Reed
Brook, footpaths and lanes to cross the enormous field
past Rector’s Wood to emerge on Wood Lane. A short
stretch of the busy Blue Stone Lane brings us to The Robin
Hood for lunch at around 12.30.
We start back the way we came then stay on Wood Lane and
out past Boundary Farm onto the mosslands to walk the
parish boundary between Mawdesley and Croston –
which is also the dividing point between Mawdesley Moss
and Croston Moss – to re-emerge at the White Bridge
at Rufford.
As usual, this is around 4 miles out and 2 miles back,
almost entirely flat, one section muddy after rain, with
a few stiles. Some fields may contain stock, so please
bring a leash with any dogs. Feel free to walk one way
or simply meet us for lunch. Queries? Ian on 813267
The Robin Hood has excellent food, a well kept changing
selection of real ales, and good quality wine. We’re
booked into their no-smoking section to eat.
Rose
Queen Day 2004
This year was my first time at the ‘helm’
of the Rose Queen Committee for Rose Queen day and what
a day. On Friday night we were setting up in beautiful
sunshine for a day we had a good idea would be wet, we
didn’t bargain for that wet. To enable people to
get to and from the marquee keeping their feet as dry
as possible we decided to change the usual plan and site
the marquee at the back of church: thank goodness we had
made plans for the wettest weather possible.
Given
the weather, the new Queen Lisa Currie had her crowning
in church, which made for a very regal occasion. All the
Queens looked lovely and this year we had more visiting
queens than usual, seven in all. Vicki Rimmer as herald
began events, Mrs June Taylor made a splendid job of crowning
Lisa: she had also made her dress, which looked beautiful
after much hard work and many stressful hours. Hilary
and Dave should be very proud. Rebecca Rimmer as retiring
queen has been a credit to Tarleton Holy Trinity, and
also to her family. I know she has enjoyed her time in
office immensely and I am sure Lisa will find this year
a wonderful experience.
I
would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to
make the day such a success. We were able to raise in
excess of £1,200 which will eventually be split
between the two church schools. Without the efforts of
all our helpers we would not be able to have an annual
Rose Queen day and I feel most strongly that this is a
tradition that should carry on for many years.
We
are losing a very important member of our committee: Pat
Stott is leaving us to move nearer to her daughter and
family in Earby. We will miss Pat’s leadership immensely
and I can assure you she is a very hard act to follow!
We wish Pat and Lew every happiness in their new home.
