The Fermor Hesketh Challenge Cup - The Medals
2006 - 2007 Season Archive

30th May - On a sunny but bitterly cold evening a fair sized crowd gathered to watch the 2007 Medals Final which was won by Royal Garrison from Preston. Portland from Southport had the better of the first half and if they had put away their chances should have gone in at half time with a lead, but the scoreline remained goalless at the interval.

During the half time break the traditional junior penalty prize was held as 5 boys from the under 11's took 5 penalties each to decide the winner. In a sudden death knockout Jamie Pratt won through to take the trophy.

Royal Garrison opened the scoring 10 mintes into the second half with a 20 yard pile driver which gave Portland's keeper no chance. Portland presed forward in search of an equaliser but in the last 10 minutes they were picked off by Royal Garrison on the break who scored another 3 without reply which in truth gave the final scoreline an untrue picture of how close the match actually was.

This Saturday sees the return of the Everton Saturday morning Soccer School which is held at Station Road for boys and girls aged 5-15 years old. The sessions begin at 9am and cost £3 per person.
25th May - The final of the 2007 Fermor Heskerh Medal Competition will be contested by Portland (Southport) and Royal Garrison (Preston).

Royal Garrison defeated Croston after extra time in the semi-final after going a goal down in the very first minute. However they hit back on the hour and the game drifted into extra time but it was Royal Garrison who scored the all important late winner.

The final has been moved back a day and will now take place at Station Road on TUESDAY 29th MAY kicking off at 7pm.

Entrance will be by admission only at £2 for adults, £1 for senior citizens and 50p for under 16’s. A programme will be available subject to availability.

22nd May - The hosts and holders of the Fermor Hesketh Challenge Cup Competition, Hesketh Bank were knocked out at the semi-final stage on Monday evening by Portland who play in the Southport and District Sunday League. Portland opened the scoring after 20 minutes when a well struck direct free kick found its way through non existent wall. On the stroke of half time they added a second and put the result beyond doubt early in the second half to run out worthy winners by three goals to nil and reach the final for the first time.

The second semi final will be on Thursday between Royal Garrison from Preston who won the competition two years ago who will play Croston from the West Lancashire League whose name last appears on the trophy as far back as 1970. The match kicks off at 7pm.

The final will be on Bank Holiday Monday with a 7pm Kick off.

An admission charge will be payable at the entrance - £2 adults, £1 Senior Citizens and 50p for under 16’s and a programme will be available.

19th May - Southport Trinity have withdrawn from the Medals competition. Tuesday’s fixture is now cancelled and Royal Garrison will play Croston on Thursday.
17th May - Portland from Southport were the first side through to the semi-finals when they finally overcame a stubborn Hesketh Bank Reserve side who played for more than an hour with 10 men. The first half ended 1-0 and Hesketh Bank had missed a penalty but eventually that extra man helped Portland who eventually hit another four without reply.

The following night Croston and Southport Amateurs entertained the crowd with a fine match played in the right spirit. The match ended all square 1-1 after extra time, and it was Croston held their nerve in the penalty shoot out to go through to the semi-final.

The night after the local derby played in steady rain throughout was another tight affair. It was Tarleton who opened the scoring after 20 minutes but Eion Bond equalised 15 minutes later for the hosts and holders of the Fermor Hesketh Trophy and then John Ascroft had a penalty well saved by keeper David LeMarinel just before the interval. Early in the second half Eion Bond added a second and despite a spirited display from Tarleton it was Hesketh Bank who won through to play Portland in the semi final.

Next week the provisional dates for games are as follows:

Monday 21st May ~ Hesketh Bank v Portland (Southport) ~ Semi Final

Tuesday 22nd May ~ Royal Garrison (Preston) v Southport Trinity ~ 1st Round

Thursday 24th May ~ Croston v Winners of Tuesday ~ Semi Final

Fixtures will be confirmed later this week. Admission is free and they all kick off at 7pm.

The provisional date for the final is Tuesday 29th May. A programme will be printed for the final and admission will be charged at the entrance with charges as follows: £2 for Adults ~ £1 for Senior Citizens and 50p for under 16’s.

12th May - The 2007 Medals competition begins on Monday evening with Hesketh Bank Reserves paired up with Portland who are members of the Southport & District Sunday League. On Tuesday Croston from the West Lancashire League play Southport Amateurs who play in the Preston & District Premier League and on Wednesday the hosts Hesketh Bank are up against Tarleton Corinthians who last season competed in the Preston & District Premier League. All matches kick off at 7pm and entrance is free of charge. The final West Lancashire league tables are now available by clicking on LEAGUE above.
6th May - The reserves brought the 2006/07 season to an end with a flurry of fixtures at Station Road during the week. Last Saturday they were well beaten by Barnoldswick United 7-1. However on Monday they defeated Garstang 1-0 and followed this up with a 4-1 win over Wyre Villa before completing the hectic schedule with a 1-0 win over Burnley Belvedere on Saturday. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.

The draw for this year’s Medal Competition has now been made as follows:

Hesketh Bank v Tarleton Corinthians

Portland (Southport) v Hesketh Bank Reserves

Croston v Southport Amateurs

Southport Trinity v Royal Garrison (Preston)

The competition will be a held on a straight knockout basis with extra time and penalties if required.

All matches will be played at Station Road with 7pm kick offs. Admission is free until the final. Dates of fixtures will be published here and at the ground when finalised.

22nd April - The first teams relegation for the second year running was confirmed following their 2-0 home defeat against Garstang on Wednesday. They completed their season on Saturday in a meaningless match against Cumbrian side Millom. The visitors took an early lead before Keiran Chana equalised on the half hour. Young Jordan Smethurst finished off the best move of the match to score his first senior goal 15 minutes into the second half and then Adam Rostron secured the points heading home a Eion Bond cross. The reserves were without a fixture but they finish their season with 5 games in 10 days starting with a trip to Milnthorpe Corinthians on Monday night. They then entertain Burnley Belvedere on Thursday evening at Station Road with a 6.30pm kick off. On Saturday they are at home again against Barnoldswick Town which kicks off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.

15th April - The first team’s chances of avoiding the drop for the second year in succession took a further blow as they lost 3-2 away to Keighley side Crosshills. Leading scorer John Ascroft gave them a perfect start bundling the ball over the line following a goal mouth scramble after just two minutes. Crosshills eventually got back into the game equalising on the half hour and then five minutes later going into the lead. A brilliant individual goal by Ascroft shortly before the interval levelled the scores. Several golden opportunities were missed in the second half as they looked for that all important third goal but as always seems to be the case when you are at the wrong end of the table it was the home side who broke away to score the winning goal in injury time.

The reserves were once again let down at Station Road as their scheduled opposition Wyre Villa rang at 12.30pm to say they couldn’t raise a team. However they are at home tomorrow evening as they entertain top of the table Springfields/BAC EE which kicks off at 6.30pm.

The first team have two games left and they must win them both to survive. On Wednesday they are at home to promotion favourites Garstang which kicks off at 6.30pm and then on Saturday they entertain Millom with a 3pm kick off. The reserves have no fixture next Saturday. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.

9th April - The first team gained three valuable points in their re-arranged match against Crooklands Casuals which was virtually trouble free with both sets of players and managers on their best behaviour, well almost! On a lovely spring day a fair sized crowd gathered to watch the match and the first half was very even with few chances created by either side. Adam Rostron broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half pouncing on a loose ball in the six yard box following a low corner. The visitors were then reduced to 10 men as their substitute who had only been on the pitch 5 minutes managed to get two yellow cards. A typical John Ascroft goal sealed the victory with 15 minutes to go which moved them a point behind their nearest relegation rivals and left Crooklands firmly in bottom spot with three matches to go. The reserves travelled to Yorkshire to play Crosshills and won by the odd goal in three. This coming Saturday the first team must make that same journey in a vital match whilst the reserves entertain Wyre Villa, with both matches kicking off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
1st April - With the first team having no fixture all eyes were on the reserves home match with Burnley Belvedere. However on a lovely spring day the visitors mysteriously never appeared and despite many phone calls the referee had no option to call the fixture off. This Saturday the first team return to action as Crooklands Casuals return to Station Road to replay the match that was abandoned a few weeks ago. The reserves travel the long journey to Crosshills and then on Easter Monday they entertain Stoneclough. All matches kick off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
25th March - The first team fell back into the relegation zone as they lost 6-1 at home to Poulton Town and to make matters worse all three of their nearest rivals won. In a very even first half there was no sign of a heavy defeat with the visitors opening the scoring after 20 minutes but a John Ascroft special levelled the scores 10 minutes before the interval. The second half however belonged to Poulton who showed why they are favourites to go up as champions and completely dominated scoring five without reply. To complete a miserable weekend the reserves were also on the end of a big defeat losing 5-0 at Whinney Hill. Next weekend the first team have no game whilst the reserves entertain Burnley Belvedere at Station Road which kicks off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
18th March - The 1st team gained a valuable point at home to fellow strugglers Furness Rovers which moved them out of the relegation zone. Adam Rostron scored the vital goal after 30 minutes with a classic finish from an attacking midfield player. The visitors from Cumbria equalised early in the second half but the game was held up for 25 minutes due to a serious injury to one of their players. Despite playing against a very strong wind and driving rain the 1st team couldn’t score the winner although John Ascroft had a fine effort brilliantly cleared off the line. The reserves lost 4-2 away to Coppull Utd with Nathan Teale and Mark Harrison scoring the goals. This coming Saturday the 1st team entertain Poulton Town at Station Road whilst the reserves travel to Accrington to play Whinney Hill. Both matches kick off at 3pm. For further details please click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
12th March - The first team match at Station Road was controversially postponed 40 minutes before kick off by the match referee who was concerned by a small area of the pitch being unfit for play, despite our visitors Millom, who had travelled all the way from Cumbria. The reserves visit to Haslingden St Mary’s proved fruitless as they were on the end of a 4-0 defeat. This Saturday the first team entertain fellow strugglers Furness Rovers whilst the reserves travel to Whinney Hill. Both matches kick off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
4th March - The heavy overnight rain put paid to the first team’s scheduled home fixture against fellow strugglers Furness Rovers. The reserves had a re-arranged fixture and they travelled to Kearsley to play Stoneclough. On a sticky surface the first half remained goalless and with 20 minutes remaining it looked as though this would be the final scoreline. However the reserves, now down to 10 men, conceded a soft goal but almost immediately hit back through substitute Nathan Teale only for the home side to snatch the three points in injury time. This Saturday the first team entertain Millom at Station Road with a 3pm kick off. The reserves have no fixture. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
25th February - The first team travelled to Accrington to play fellow strugglers Whinney Hill and despite the recent wet weather the pitch was in good condition. The home side were allowed too much room after just two minutes and took an early lead. The rest of the first half was fairly uneventful apart from one controversial incident when Whinny Hill’s goalkeeper deliberately handled the ball outside the box to prevent Eoin Bond a clear chance to equalise. The referee decided to give the keeper a just yellow card when the rules clearly state he should have had a red. At the beginning of the second half the home side were awarded a harsh penalty for hand ball and despite a great effort by Henry Highton to save it, this put Whinney Hill two up. Keiran Chana pulled one back on the hour but further defensive mistakes later in the game allowed Whinney Hill to run out 4-1 winners. This leaves the team in a precarious league position and a very important game at Station Road next week at home to Furness Rovers which kicks off at 3pm. The reserves fixture at home was postponed due to a waterlogged Station road pitch. Next week they have no fixture. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
18th February - The first team returned action when they entertained bottom club Crooklands Casuals which ended very controversially at Station Road. It was the visitors who began brightly and earned themselves a penalty after just 2 minutes but keeper Henry Highton blocked well and the ball was scrambled clear. Crooklands had a couple of good chances to take the lead in the first half hour but poor finishing kept the scores level until a second penalty was given away and this there was no mistake. John Ascroft equalised on the stroke of half time and added a second 10 minutes into the second half. Eion Bond further increased the lead to put the team well in command as the visitors looked out of the game. However there was no sign of what was about to follow as an off the ball incident escalated into a mass brawl. Whilst the referee was sorting out the initial incident and in the process of sending off Luke Toner for his part, the brawl began again. At this point the referee decided he could no longer control the players and after 75 minutes the match was abandoned and he left the field of play. Both clubs will have to answer charges once the Lancashire FA receive his report and the outcome of the game itself will be decided by the League’s executive committee after they have had the chance to view the referee’s report. All in all it was a very unsavoury end to a game of football and something that has not been seen at Station Road in living memory. The reserves had no fixture but return to action next Saturday when they entertain Burnley Belvedere at Station Road. Meanwhile the first team travel to Accrington to face Whinney Hill. Both matches kick off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
11th February - With the first team having no fixture the spotlight should have fallen on the reserves at Station Road, but the recent bad weather put paid to that. This coming weekend the first team return to action with a ‘must win’ home fixture against bottom club Crooklands Casuals which kicks off at 3pm. The reserves have no fixture. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
4th February - The first team travelled to Poulton Town who had only lost two matches so far this season. The home side completely ran the show in the first half rattling in four goals without reply before the interval and threatened to finish with a cricket score. Stern words at the interval and a change of tactics saw the 1st team rally back in spectacular style. Substitute David Hogg replied first with a looping header and further goals from Adam Rostron and Luke Toner pulled the score back to 4-3 all within 7 minutes. It was Poulton’s turn to looked shell shocked but they managed to get a fifth before John Ascroft scored a fine individual goal to make the final score 5-4. Nathan Teale scored for the reserves in their match at Station Road against Todmorden Borough which finished 1-1. This coming Saturday the first team have no fixture but the reserves entertain Barnoldswick Town at Station Road with a 3pm kick off. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
Hesketh Bank AFC 1st Team 2006 - 2007. Tony Sergeant, David Whittaker, John Ascroft, Morgan Dodgson, David Hogg, Henry Highton, Josh Brierley, Eion Bond, Keiran Chana, Vaughan Birkby, Daniel Birkby, Luke Toner, Danny Wilson, Andy Cope, Ben Goodson
28th January - After a relatively dry week both teams returned to action. The first team entertained seconded place Trimpell from Morecambe and in an even first half took the lead through a well worked goal from midfielder Luke Toner after 20 minutes. Just as the half time whistle was about to be blown Andy Cope sent a pass back to keeper Henry Highton who was under pressure from a Trimpell forward and as he went to kick the ball up field it bobbled ‘a la England keeper Paul Robinson’ and trickled over the line to give the visitors an unlikely equaliser. The second half was again keenly fought with very few chances but as is always the case the visitors took the three points to move to the top of the table when a shot was deflected past Highton on the hour. Toner had the best chance to equalise with ten minutes remaining but his header from a John Ascroft cross was superbly saved by the Trimpell keeper. The reserves were surprisingly beaten 5-0 away at lowly Bolton County although it was noted that their first team had no fixture. This coming weekend the first team travel to Poulton Town whilst the reserves entertain Todmorden Borough at Station Road. Both games now revert to 3pm kick offs. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
21st January - The continued bad weather put paid to the 1st team’s home fixture at Station Road and the reserves trip to Milnthorpe. Both teams will be hoping for an improvement in the weather this coming week as the first team entertain second placed Trimpell from Morecambe at Station Road and the reserves who travel to Bolton County. Both games kick off at 2pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
14th January - With the 1st team having no fixture the spotlight was due to fall on the reserves but the recent poor weather meant their scheduled fixture at home to Wyre Villa was postponed due to a waterlogged Station Road pitch. This coming Saturday the first team are at home to Cumbrian side Furness Rovers whilst the reserves travel to Milnthorpe Corinthians. Both games kick off at 2pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
7th January 2007 - Following the holiday break both teams returned to action with long away trips. The first team travelled to Cumbria against BAe Barrow and opened the scoring after just two minutes with a 20 yard strike from Daniel Birkby and completely dominated the first half but missing many chances. Early in the second half the home side equalised as the game became more even and as in the previous match before Christmas they conceded another 90th minute goal to give away the points. The reserves had a fruitless trip to Barnoldswick as they lost 2-0. This coming weekend the first team have no fixture but the reserves are at Station Road entertaining Wyre Villa with a 2pm kick off. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
24th December - The first team ended 2006 with a point in their local derby at home to Croston Sports Club in front of a decent sized crowd.. However they will feel as though it was 2 points lost as they were leading 2-0 with just a minute of normal time and three minutes of injury time left. Croston began the better of the two teams on a very heavy Station Road pitch and a mixture of bad finishing and a post kept the scoreline goalless. After 20 minutes John Ascroft finished well to put his side in front and then Kieran Chana added a second on the half hour. The visitors never looked like scoring until they did in the last minute and then stormed forward to score again in the dying seconds. The teams return to action on 6th January 2007 with both travelling afar. The first team are in Cumbria against BAe Barrow whilst the reserves travel to Barnoldswick. Both games kick off at 2pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
17th December - The first team travelled to Kearsley to play league leaders Stoneclough Utd on a pitch which was declared fit to play after a late inspection. On a very sticky surface they had goalkeeper Henry Highton to thank in the first half who made several fine saves to keep the score goalless at the interval. Ten minutes into the second half John Ascroft went clear to put his team in front, however the lead was short lived as the league leaders were stung into action and quickly drew level two minutes later. Two further goals by the same Stoneclough player earned himself a hatrick and his side 3 valuable points to keep them clear at the top of the table. The reserve team fixture at Station Road was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and do not have a fixture now until 6th January. The first team return to action this Saturday as they entertain local rivals Croston Sports Club which kicks off at 2pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
10th December - Both the first team and reserve team fixtures fell foul of the recent wet weather. This coming Saturday, weather permitting, the first team travel to Bury to play league leaders Stoneclough whilst the reserves entertain Todmorden Borough at Station Road. Both games kick off at 2pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
3rd December - The first team recorded their first league win since beating BAe Barrow almost two months ago as they travelled to Tempest United. Adam Rostron replacing Chris Tyson who has moved on to pastures new, scored his first goal at this level to give his team a 1-0 advantage at the interval. Eion Bond who had come on as a substitute for the injured John Ascroft late in the first half helped himself to two goals in the second half before the home side received a consolation penalty. The reserves were looking to return to action but were thwarted by the match referee who decided Station Road wasn’t playable despite the visitors Stoneclough travelling all the way from Bury. This coming Saturday the first team are at home to bottom club Crooklands Casuals whilst the reserves travel to Haslingden St Marys both kicking off at 2pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
26th November - The reserve team match at Station Road was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. This coming Saturday the first team return to action with an away trip down the M61 to play Tempest United whilst the reserves will be hoping for a drier week as they entertain Stoneclough from Bury at Station Road. Both matches kick off at 2pm.
19th November - Those spectators brave enough to watch the match which was once again played in almost gale force winds and driving rain witnessed a classic derby cup tie. Unfortunately it was the visitors from Croston who eventually progressed to the next round. With the wind at their backs John Ascroft opened the scoring on 20 minutes and should have added a second shortly before the interval. As often happens Croston then equalised from a corner and the teams went in all square at the interval. Early in the second half the visitors missed a penalty but despite playing against the elements it was the home side who looked more likely to score. However the game moved into extra time and a 20 yard strike after just 2 minutes into the top corner by the substitute Tom Darkins put the home side in front. Early into the second period of extra time the visitors equalised and with time running out and penalties looking likely Croston scored with virtually the last kick of the match to go through to the next round. Next week the first team have no fixture. The reserves return to action this coming Saturday at home to Garstang which kicks off at 2pm. For further details click on LEAGUE above.
13th November - The first team lost 2-0 at a windswept Station Road against Whinney Hill from Accrington. Facing the element in the first half they safely got to the interval without conceding, however the visitors proved to be stronger and took the lead midway through the second half before sealing the game with a second late in the game. The reserves extended their long unbeaten league run with a 3-3 draw at Burnley Belvedere. This coming Saturday the first team are at home to near neighbours Croston in the first round of the Presidents Cup which kicks off at 1.30pm. The reserves have no fixture. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
5th November - The first team’s long distance journey to Cumbria to play Furness Rovers was not in vain as they earned a 2-2 draw. John Ascroft opened the scoring but the home side hit back with two goals to go in front at the interval. John Ascroft’s scored again in the second half to earn his side a point. The reserves can concentrate on the league as they crashed out of the reserve cup in their first round tie at Station Road against a youthful Burnley United. Keiran Chana scored their only goal after the visitors had stormed into an early two goal lead. Two further goals before the interval put the result beyond doubt and they completed the scoring with two more in the second half. This coming weekend the first team are at home to Whinney Hill from Accrington whilst the reserves travel to Burnley Belvedere. Both games kick off at 2pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
29th October - The first team travelled the short journey to near neighbours Croston who were just below them in the table. The home side started brightly and should have opened the scoring on a couple of occasions. It came as no surprise that they eventually went in front to give them a one goal advantage at the interval. Strong words from the management team at half time saw the team play better and should have equalised but Any Cope’s close range effort was cleared off the line. However Croston made sure of the points scoring a second late in the game. The reserves match at home was postponed due to waterlogged Station Road. This coming Saturday the first team face a long trip to Cumbria were their opponents are Furness Rovers which kicks off at 2pm. The reserves are in cup action at Station Road against Burnley United which kicks off at 1.30pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
22nd October - The first team disappointedly bowed out of the Lancashire Amateur Cup at the 3rd round stage losing by the only goal at Shevington. The reserves staged a remarkable second half comeback to extend their unbeaten run to ten matches. Going in at the interval 3-0 down to visitors Milnthorpe Corinthians they looked dead and buried but Eion Bond gave them hope on the hour and two goals from Keiran Charna drew them level to finish all square at 3-3. This Saturday the first team return to league action as they travel the short distance to Croston Sports Club, whilst the reserves entertain Burnley Belvedere at Station Road. Both matches kick off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
15th October - The first team returned from their visit to Norcross & Warbreck with a well earned point. The home side opened the scoring early in the game before Andy Pimlott equalised with a fine individual goal on the half hour. Norcross went into the lead again with 20 minutes remaining but a rare goal from a Morgan Dodgson header in the 85th minute completed the scoring. The reserves returned from action from their week off and continued to score plenty of goals. Mill Hill St Peters were the visitors and were sent back to Blackburn with a 7-2 defeat. Goals came from David Whittaker and Eion Bond who each got two and David Pinckard, Bart Scattagalia, and new signing Tom Darkins all got one each. This coming Saturday the first team are away to Skevington in the 3rd round of the Lancashire Cup whilst the reserves entertain Milnthorpe Corinthians in the league. The first team match kicks off at 2pm and the reserve team match at Station Road 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
8th October - Spectators at Station Road enjoyed a goal feast as the 1st team eventually overcame visitors BAe Barrow Sports Club 6-4. Storming into a 3-0 lead within the first 15 minutes with goals from John Nelson, Daniel Birkby and John Ascroft it looked as though a big win was on the cards. However the visitors hit back with two quick goals before John Ascroft added his second. Not to be outdone Barrow scored a third just before the interval to make it 4-3. Surprisingly the second half was a relatively quiet affair until 10 minutes from time when Barrow equalised. With time running out Danny Wilde scored two late goals to earn his team all three points. This Saturday the first team travel to Norcross & Warbreck whilst the reserves return to action entertaining Mill Hill St Peters at Station Road. Both games kick off at 3pm. For further details click on LEAGUE above.
1st October - The first team progressed safely through to the next round of the Lancashire Amateur Cup winning 5-1 at Lancaster Boys Club who play in the North Lancashire League. Leading scorer Daniel Birkby added another three goals to his tally with goals also from Andy Pimlott and Chris Tyson. The reserves continued their good form with a comfortable 3-1 over Bolton County at Station Road with two goals from Luke Toner and one from Eion Bond. This Saturday the first team return to league action as they entertain BAe Barrow Sports Club at Station Road which kicks off at 3pm. The reserves are without a fixture. For more details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
25th September - An injury time equaliser from Chris Tyson earned the first team their first point in four matches in their game at Station Road against Norcross & Warbreck. Earlier the visitors went in front after just 5 minutes before Daniel Birkby put them level at the interval. John Nelson was sent off early in the second half and a late penalty looked to have secured the points for Norcross but for Tyson’s wonderful strike from a 25 yard free kick. Meanwhile the reserves recorded their biggest away win since joining the West Lancashire League nearly 20 years ago with an 11-1 victory at Wyre Villa. Eion Bond scored four, John Ascroft got three, Keiran with two and one each from Nathan Teale and David Hogg. This Saturday the 1st team are away to Lancaster Boys Club in the 1st Round of the Lancashire Cup which kicks off at 2pm. The reserves entertain Bolton County at Station Road which kicks off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
17th September - Following last weeks 2-0 home defeat to Stoneclough the 1st team travelled to Morecambe to play leaders Trimpell. Despite going in at the interval all square at 1-1 thanks to a Luke Toner goal the home team secured their top spot scoring three without reply in the second half. The reserves unbeaten run continued with a 2-0 win at Todmorden the previous week being followed by a 4-4 home draw against Whinney Hill. However they squandered a 4-0 lead after just 30 minutes with a poor second half performance. The scorers were John Ascroft with two and one each from Eion Bond and David Hogg. This coming Saturday the first team entertain Norcross & Warbreck and the reserves travel to Wyre Villa, with both games kicking off at 3pm. For further details click on ‘LEAGUE’ above.
3rd September - The first team escaped the worst of the weather as they travelled the long journey north to play Millom in Cumbria. They probably wished they hadn’t, finding themselves 2-0 down at the interval which was followed with an undisciplined second half performance ending up with three players sent off and a further two goals behind before substitute Andy Cope scored a late consolation. The reserves match at home was postponed in common with a lot of other league matches due to a waterlogged ground. This Saturday the first team entertain Stoneclough from Bury and the reserves travel to Todmorden Borough with both matches kicking off at 3pm. For further details click on league above.
28th August - A late goal from substitute Alex Lennie earned all three points for the first team as they defeated Tempest United 2-1 at home. Earlier Danny Wilde opened the scoring in the first minute with a spectacular volley, with Tempest drawing level 15 minutes later. The reserves recent unbeaten run continued but they drew for the third game on the trot 2-2 at Mill Hill St Peters with goals from Tom Archer and John Ascroft.
