1st
June - Following a disappointing
league campaign the first team finished
the season on a high winning their own
Medal Competition, kindly sponsored by
Graham Abram of Abram Brothers Builders,
in front of a large crowd last night at
Station Road. In a fiercely fought contest
they overcame the holders Royal Garrison
from Preston eventually winning by 3 goals
to one. The first half ended goalless
with the holders having most of the play.
During
the half time interval the crowd was entertained
by the annual penalty prize contested
by two boys each from the under 9’s,
10’s and 12’s, with Gary Grier
from the under 9’s being the winner.
The
second half began much the same as the first
but Daniel Birkby broke free of the defence
to slot home on 55 minutes to give the hosts
the lead. The game now became a lot more
open as garrison tried to force an equaliser
but Birkby increased the lead with his second
goal after 70 minutes. Paul Rimmer added
a third on 85 minutes with a header before
a late consolation from the holders.
A
new trophy kindly donated by Vaughan Birkby
for the man of the match in a medals final
was awarded to Chris Tyson of Hesketh Bank.

Life's
a lottery as club Banks nearly £5000
March 3rd, 2006
By Nicola Rowlands, Southport Visiter
CHAIRMAN
of Hesketh Bank AFC Paul Sergeant is "absolutely
delighted" after the club received
a grant of £4,700 from the lottery
funding programme 'Awards for All'.
The
West Lancashire League club accepted the
grant from a Sport England supported system.
The club was founded in 1922 and has earned
a strong reputation in the county leagues.
The last ten years have seen a rehaul in
the club, combining the senior club with
the Hesketh Boys Club.
Paul,
who has been involved in the club since
being a junior in 1970, said: "This
will help us towards our main aim; to get
something in Hesketh Bank which can be used
not only by the club but also by local schools
and for the community. "We have been
working towards this for ten years and it
is nice to get some money and recognition."
The club plans to use the money for further
development, providing floodlit pitches
and better changing facilities.
They aim to become an FA Charter Development
Club which would further enhance their reputation
and help with funding from the Football
Foundation. Paul added: "We will be
putting in our application in about three
or four weeks so that is something else
to really look forward to."
These improvements are expensive and although
the majority of funding will come from the
Football Foundation, the club will have
to provide the balance. However, with grants
such as these, fund raising events and support
from the local community, the club is still
on track with their ambitious plans.
Paul
added: "It really is great news for
everyone involved." |
